The Great Northern Railway Society exists to foster interest in and to record and preserve the history of, not only, the Great Northern Railway but also its predecessors and successors right up to the present day. The GNRS caters for all aspects including architecture and infrastructure, track layouts and signalling, locomotives and rolling stock, acts of parliament etc.
From 1923 the Great Northern Railway became a constituent of the
London & North Eastern Railway, which covered, mainly, the eastern side of Britain north of London. In 1948 the nationalised British Railways was formed and most of the former GN was included in the Eastern Region.
Today the southern part of the Great Northern out of Kings Cross, served by First Capital Connect and until recently (the whole of the East Coast Main Line) by GNER, is now in the hands of new franchises. The following TOCs operate over former GNR lines:- Cross Country Trains, East Midland Trains, First Capital Connect, Grand Central Railways, Hull Trains, National Express East Coast & Northern Rail.
If your railway interest includes any of the above then the GNRS has something for you. Newsletters have articles including historical and present day content.
